Introduction
The main function of Agriculture Department is to provide technical knowhow to the farmers regarding successful cultivation of different Crops, Conservation of natural resources like soil, water & environment , judicious use of Agriculture machinery & Biogas plant etc. and to ensure the availability of quality inputs like seeds , fertilizers, pesticides etc to the farmers.
Agriculture Department is providing technical knowledge to farmers by arranging farmers training camps at district level, block and village level. Two district level farmer training camps are organized one each in kharif and rabi season. Similarly 22 block level farmers training camps are organized in all the 11 blocks of Ludhiana during rabi and kharif seasons. Likewise more than 500 village level training camps are organized keeping in view the requirements of farmers and the crop stages. Department also arranges camps, fields days, farmers field schools and demonstrations under different schemes.
For ensuring the availability of quality inputs to the farmers, samples of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides are also drawn from the premises of input dealers regularly. In case of any sort of violation, action against the culprit dealer is taken as per the Seed Act/Fertilizer Control Order/Insecticide Act.
To preserve the natural resources like soil, water and environment, Department is laying more stress on Crop Diversification, improving soil health, judicial use of underground water for irrigation. For implementation of Crop Diversification plan of Punjab Government, maize crop is being popularized by the department as a possible & viable alternative crop and seed of maize hybrids is distributed to the farmers on subsidized prices. Similarly demonstrations are organized on Paddy-Transplanted, Direct Sowing of Rice, Integrated Pest Management, resource conservation technologies & Lazer-Levelling techniques at farmer’s field level with the participation of farmers.
Department has four Soil testing labs in the district. These are located in Machhiwara, Samrala, Khanna and Jagraon. In these Labs large numbers of soil samples are tested and farmers are advised to use fertilizers on the basis of test reports to avoid over usage. The samples are collected from the farmer fields as a soil testing campaign in the adopted villages by our staff & tested free of cost.
Farmers are provided seed of improved wheat and paddy at the rate of half acre per farmer on 50% of seed cost under ‘Seed Village Scheme’. Under this scheme trainings are also provided to the selected farmers on seed production and storage. To save seeds for next year, seed drums are provided on subsidized rates. Subsidized seeds for green manuring and Propicaonazole (fungicide) are given under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana scheme.
The Department is also providing facilities to farmers under ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) Scheme such as Trainings, Demonstrations and Exposure Visits of farmers within district, within state and interstate. Under this scheme training facilities to ‘Self Help Groups’ are also provided.
To boost the area and production of pulse crops, the “National Food Security Mission-Pulses” was initiated in district during the year 2007. Under this mission the seeds of pulse crops and other inputs are supplied to farmers on subsidized rates.
Department provides farm implements like Zero-till drill, Rotavator, Straw-Reaper, Strip-till drill, Spray pumps, Multicrop-Planter, Lazer-Leveller etc. on subsidized rates to the farmers under different schemes.
Department also conducts crop cutting experiments to actually know yield of different crops grown in the district. Results of which are sent to government of Punjab through Directorate of Agriculture, Punjab.
