Payal is a historic town. It is said to have come into existence about 1200 years back. It was earlier known as Sahibgarh after the name of Maharani Sahib Kaur. This historical town is situated at a distance of 35 Kms from Ludhiana, in the south of city Doraha, on N.H.1 (Ambala-Ludhiana Road).

Payal is greatful to be one of the important sub-divisonal office of Ludhiana district. Payal is a Legislative Assembly constituency and an important city of Fatehgarh Sahib Lok-Sabha constituency.
This city has an ancient and historical background. This city has faced many sultanates and ruler. About 770 years ago a Muslim Faqir Shah Hussain settled here on a 'Tilla'. Then his followers also came and settled here. When this land was dug out to build houses, then an anklet (payal) was found. So,Faquir Shah Hussain named this place as “Payal”. The grave of Shah Hussain is present here today also. After that during 1580-85,this city was ruled by King Akbar. During the year 1766,Maharaja Amar Singh of Patiala made this city, a part of the state “Patiala”. Maharaja Amar Singh got built a fort in this city with the co-operation of Mughals in 1771. This fort is present here today also. At present,Govt.Girls High School is being run in this fort. Besides this fort, there are 17 Hindu temples, five Pir, Gompir, Samadhi of queen, Mazar of Baba Main Maula and about five gurdwaras in this city. There is a very ancient temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati. There is also a temple named “Dasnam’s Akhara”. Another temple of this type is situated in Uttar-Pradesh. People of all religions live here with great love and affestion.

People of almost all religions live in this city. No communal riots of any kind has ever happened in the city
This city is politically prominent due to territory of S. Gian Singh Rara (C.M. PEPSU state) and Late Sh. Beant Singh (Ex chief Minister, Punjab). The household village “Kotli” of S.Beant Singh is situated at a distance of 4 km from payal. S.Beant Singh played an important role in extinguishing the deadly terrorism from Punjab. At present ,S. Charanjit Singh Atwal is M.L.A of Punjab Legislative assembly (Hon'ble Speaker, Punjab Legislative assembly).
As far as education is concerned, the city does not have much educational facilities. Besides one Govt. High School for girls, there is one Senior Secondary School for boys and two Primary schools in this city.
Important facilities like Civil Hospital, Vaternery Hospital, Post office, Telephone Exchange, Board of Electicity are available here. Besides these facilities,there is a Police-station and sub-Divisional office. Being large and historical town, first of all it is notified area Committee,then Nagar council has provided facilities like clean streets, street lights and water supply to the people of the town. The water is being supplied through 1200 connections of water from two tubewells. Nagar Council has constructed "Shaheed Beant Singh Memorial Market" in the memory of Late Ex-Chief Minister S. Beant Singh of Punjab. In the first stage, 23 shops are constructed and given on rent. There is a planning to Construct about 20-30 more shops. Muncipal Council office use for commercial point of view is mostly important for financial position of payal city and new MC complex constructed under the plan on situated at Chawa-Payal road near old octroi post.Police station,Payal & site of Water Supply tubewell no.2 with new modern class location.
